After the first couple of days in Bunaken snorkeling four times a day, I started to cool my jets and pace myself some. I climbed the hill above my cottage and followed the path north and south across the high part of the island. The locals were very friendly, always saying hello, and the tropical vegetation was gorgeous.

I found though that a mile walk feels a lot harder in the equator heat and humidity, and was grateful when I was given rides back on motorbikes. Sometimes we negotiated a price, and sometimes the good samaritan would not accept money.
