22 June~2011
The trip I did last week was downhill at the beginning, which meant the hard part would be on the way back to the truck. It was steep uphill, from Ponderosa pine trees up through Lodgepole and into Spruce and Fir. I stopped twice, for about twenty minutes each time, to rest. The second time I was wore out, and wasn't to anxious to put the pack on again.
The memory of that will make me go through my stuff to lighten the pack for our next trip the day after tomorrow, when me and the dogs head up again.
I was a little stiff for a couple of days, but not too bad. I work out constantly to be ready for backpacking - walking with a weighted down back, and riding my bike down a hill and up again regularly. It pays off.
The valley I went down into has Calypso Orchids which grow in a band along the stream for several miles. They bloom in early to mid June. The flowers are small - only about an inch from top to bottom, but are true orchids. It is always a thrill to spot them again after a long winter season.
